Going Beyond Recall Quiz – Use cases

Read time : 2 minute

As part of the “Going Beyond Recall Quiz” series of articles, drill scenarios are an engaging and effective way to develop skills in complex decision-making scenarios. By presenting one-question scenarios with changing variables, these cases enable learners to make quick judgments and adapt to varying conditions.

Definition

Drill scenarios involve a single question embedded in a short, realistic scenario where key parameters, like customer preferences, change with each iteration. This approach is especially useful for sales enablement training, where understanding and responding to diverse customer needs in real-time is essential. Learners are introduced to a brief scenario that reflects a real-world situation, challenging them to think on their feet and choose the most effective response in a specific situation.

Example

Let’s consider a sales training where the learner is trained about new products. Here is a typical example of a basic quiz:

What are the primary features of the mid-range smartphone model in our product line?

  1. High-resolution camera, extensive storage, and low battery life.
  2. Standard camera, long battery life, and mid-range pricing.
  3. High-resolution camera, mid-range pricing, and high storage capacity.
  4. Average camera, short battery life, and low price.

Correct Answer: 2. Standard camera, long battery life, and mid-range pricing.

In this question, the learner is simply recalling product features without considering the customer’s specific needs or preferences. Unlike a drill scenario, it doesn’t require practical application, decision-making, or adaptation to a real-world situation.

Now, imagine a drill scenario exercise for sales reps learning how to respond to various customer inquiries. Here’s a sample case:

A customer walks into your electronics store and starts browsing the smartphone section. After a few minutes, they approach you with questions. They explain that they need help choosing the right smartphone model but aren’t sure which one would best suit their needs. They mention that they’d love a device with a good camera to capture high-quality photos, as well as long battery life to get through a full day of use. However, they’re clear that they’re looking for a mid-range option and aren’t interested in spending a premium price.

After listening to their needs, which product would you recommend for this customer?

  1. Suggest smartphone X – It boasts professional-grade camera quality and offers top-of-the-line photography features, but it’s significantly above their mid-range price expectation.
  2. Recommend smartphone Y – This phone fits their budget and offers a reliable battery life that could last them all day. However, while its camera quality is decent, it doesn’t perform as well in low-light conditions .
  3. Propose smartphone Z – This model offers excellent camera performance and additional storage space for photos and videos, making it ideal for a photo enthusiast. However, its battery life is below average, and it may require frequent charging.

Correct Answer: The correct recommendation is smartphone Y. Even though the camera quality isn’t exceptional, it meets the customer’s primary criteria: a good balance of battery life and affordability. This choice demonstrates understanding the customer’s budget constraint while offering them a balanced solution.

The case then reiterate the question with a different customer who values different characteristics of the product.

An evolution of this case is to allow the learner to ask a few additional questions to the client in order to better understand his/her needs if the learner considers that he/she misses information.

This drill scenario helps sales reps practice adapting to customer needs by focusing on their priorities rather than on product specs alone. Learners can quickly try multiple cases with different customer profiles, refining their responses and building confidence in real-life selling situations.
